SMS Verification Code Not Received

Short answer: On our side, the SMS code was likely sent successfully and accepted by your carrier, but your carrier or phone may have blocked it before it reached your screen, so you never see anything. Try a different phone number, or check your carrier's spam filtering settings.

Why this happens

On our side, an SMS message can show as "accepted" or "delivered" by the carrier, but that only confirms the carrier received it, not that it necessarily reached your phone screen. Some carriers may accept a message and then silently filter it, especially messages from short codes or unrecognized senders. When that happens, you never see anything arrive, even though the code was sent successfully.

This is more common when:

  • You're on a mobile network in certain countries (Brazil is a frequent example)
  • Your phone has a spam-filtering or "unknown sender" blocking app or setting enabled
  • You're on a company/corporate phone line with stricter message filtering

What to try

  1. Check with your carrier whether SMS from short codes or unrecognized senders is blocked on your line. This setting is often on by default and can be turned off on request.
  2. Check for spam-filtering apps on your phone (built-in or third-party) that may be silently blocking or archiving the message.
  3. Try a different phone number if possible. Requesting a code on a new number resets your attempt count automatically.

Attempt limits

Each phone number has a limited number of verification attempts. If you've already requested the maximum number of codes on a number and haven't entered one successfully, requesting again on the same number won't generate a new code. Using a different number resets the attempt count automatically.

Still stuck?

If you've confirmed the above doesn't apply to you, contact support with:

  • The phone number you're using (with country code)
  • Roughly when you requested the code(s)
  • Your carrier, if known

We can check our delivery logs to confirm whether the code reached the carrier successfully. Note that once a message shows "Delivered," the issue is almost always on the carrier or device side rather than ours. See Twilio's own explanation of this behavior: SMS messages show the status "Delivered", but aren't showing up.
